Elkhorn Ribfest is back — and this year looks to be the best one yet. Happening July 15-18 at the Walworth County Fairgrounds, this annual rib competition is the highlight for many community and professional barbecuers. If you’re planning to head out to this four-day event, here’s a few things to know before you go!
- It’s free.
This event is free to attend — and has free parking. But don’t forget cash for all of the delicious food vendors! Which brings us to our next point… - Bring your friends.
“Go with a group, 3 or 4 friends. Everyone can get something from different vendors. Then split the food among your group to give yourself a chance to sample everything,” recommends Larry Gaffey, General Manager of the Walworth County Fairgrounds. - Good food.
Vendors from all over the country will be on-site for this four-day event. Got a picky eater in your crew? There are plenty of other carnival-style food vendors. - Good music.
With more than 12 bands playing over the four days, there’s something for everyone when it comes to music entertainment. You can find the full music line-up on the Ribfest website. - Good times.
After you’re done filling up on delicious BBQ, head to the carnival to try your hand at the games and rides. Or check out the artisan village to pick up some crafts from area vendors. Plus, Arcy, a spray can artist, will be painting large murals live during the event. - Vote!
You can vote for your favorite BBQ vendor (all the more reason to try them all!). Awards are handed out Sunday evening, including a People’s Choice award and a Grand Champion award. - Take a seat.
Bring your own lawn chair or picnic blanket, or grab a “free lawn” chair (aka a bale of straw) distributed free throughout the fairgrounds. - Bring your bike.
Got a motorcycle you’d like to show off? Bring your chopper for the Ribfest Rib Run, a free motorcycle show open to all. There are cash prizes for each category plus a Grand Champion award. - Keeping it clean.
There will be handwashing stations throughout the event, plus bathroom attendants cleaning the bathrooms regularly. Masks are available, but not required as it is an outdoor event with plenty of space for social distancing. - Who will win?
25 teams will compete for the best BBQ pork ribs on Sunday, judged by certified Kansas City BBQ judges. Winner will be announced Sunday evening with the other event awards.
