Nestled between Wisconsin Dells, Baraboo Bluffs, and the Wisconsin River, the Crane Discovery Center at the International Crane Foundation’s global headquarters is the only place to see all 15 crane species from around the globe. Many of these cranes are listed as endangered or vulnerable and can be difficult to see in the wild.
The world’s 15 crane species are found on five continents and live in some of the most remote and wild places on the planet. Many also share the landscapes they need to survive with people.
In addition to crane viewing, the Platte River Experience in our Migration Center offers visitors the opportunity to experience what it is like to view cranes from a blind. A mural, painted by Renowned Artist Victor Bakhtin also fills the space. This self-guided, interactive experience is open daily.
Visitors can also explore the natural beauty of the restored prairie by hiking the many miles of trails, to view natural plant and bird species. Tours start in the George Archibald Visitor’s Center, with a special introductory video about the foundation’s global work. The gift shop provides a unique shopping experience, displaying gifts from around the world.
Located in Baraboo, just a short drive from Wisconsin Dells, the International Crane Foundation is open daily from May 1 – Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Public tours will be held on weekends at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. in May, September, and October; and daily in June, July, and August. Please note that we will be closed June 21, 2025, until 4 p.m. to prepare for An Evening with the Cranes. Our annual fundraiser is a magical summer evening with food, wine and cranes! Tickets are available on our website at: https://savingcranes.org/events/an-evening-with-the-cranes/.
The International Crane Foundation (ICF) works worldwide to conserve cranes and the ecosystems, watersheds, and flyways on which they depend. We provide knowledge, leadership, and inspiration to engage people in resolving threats to cranes and their diverse landscapes. From its nearly 300-acre headquarters in Baraboo, Wisconsin, the ICF reach extends across the globe, with offices and staff in China, Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, and South Africa, as well as Texas. It works through strong partnerships with local organizations, governments, universities, businesses, and others in these regions. More than 135 ICF staff and associates work with a network of hundreds of specialists in 50 countries on five continents.
The foundation is committed to a future where all 15 of the world’s crane species are secure. Through the charisma of cranes, ICF envisions a future where people work together for wild crane populations and the landscapes they depend on — and by doing so, find new pathways to sustain our water, land, and livelihoods. Visit www.savingcranes.org for more information and to support the work of ICF.
